Welcome to Kyoto Shin-ai Church! Everyone is welcome at our Sunday worship, whether or not you are a Christian, and whether this is your first time at a church.
All our services and meetings are held in Japanese, but this page will help you follow along. English and Korean Bibles are available to borrow at the church.
One of our pastors studied in the United Kingdom, and another is from Korea (see our pastors). A few of our members also speak some English. They may not always be present, but please feel free to ask at the reception.

⏱️ The sermon (message) is about 20 minutes. The whole service lasts about 75 minutes, from 10:30 to 11:45.
⛪ About our worship
- We sing hymns, pray, read the Bible together, and listen to a sermon from the Bible (in Japanese).
- We worship together with our sister churches, Tenjugaoka Church and Akeno Christ Church (Japanese websites). On some Sundays the sermon is given at one of these churches and shown here on a screen by live stream. Worship always takes place here at Kyoto Shin-ai Church.
- You will receive a program in Japanese. The table below explains each item in order.
- When you see ★, please stand if you are able.
- Casual clothes are fine. Children are welcome.
📖 How to read the program
| On the program | In English | What happens |

| 前奏 | Prelude | Instrumental music. We quietly prepare our hearts for worship. |
| 招詞 | Call to Worship | The leader reads a Bible verse that calls us to worship. |
| 讃栄 ★ | Opening Doxology | A short song of praise. The number is from the Japanese hymnal Shin Seika. |
| 賛美 ★ | Hymn | We sing a hymn from Shin Seika (the number is shown). |
| 主の祈り | The Lord’s Prayer | We pray together the prayer Jesus taught. Please feel free to pray in your own language. |
| 交読 | Responsive Reading | The leader and the congregation read a psalm in turn. |
| 信仰告白 | Confession of Faith | We say the Apostles’ Creed together. Please feel free to say it in your own language. |
| 牧会祈祷 | Pastoral Prayer | The pastor prays for the church and the world. |
| 聖書 | Scripture Reading | The Bible passage for the sermon. See the table of book names below. |
| 説教 | Sermon | A message from the Bible, in Japanese. The title is in 「 」. |
| 聖餐（第1日曜日） | Holy Communion (first Sunday of the month) | Bread and cup are shared with those who have been baptized, in any church. If you have not been baptized, please remain quietly in your seat during this time. |
| 祈祷 | Prayer | A prayer before the offering. |
| 賛美・献金 ★ | Hymn and Offering | We sing while the offering is collected. Envelopes are at the reception; an empty envelope is fine. Visitors need not feel obliged to give. |
| 感謝 ★ | Prayer of Thanksgiving | A prayer of thanks for the offering. |
| 頌栄 ★ | Closing Doxology | A song of praise to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. |
| 祝祷 ★ | Benediction | The pastor pronounces God’s blessing. |
| 報告 | Announcements | News shared by the three churches. |
| カテキズム | Catechism | One question and answer from a catechism for children and parents, read by the pastor. |
